There are many rivers in the Brazilian Amazon with good fishing, but not many with the plethora of species and quantity of quality specimens as the Rio Dos Sonhos. What is even more special, is the rarity of being completely devoid of human presence. This unique river, a small tributary in the Xingu River basin, is particular in that its morphology allows for sight-fishing from the boat or on foot.

Get ready to chase the mighty Arapaima, immerse yourself in the rhythm of the forest, and live a fishing adventure that will stay with you forever.
Angling Frontiers
The water we will fish is unnavigable and such a harsh terrain to negotiate means that a large part of the system of rivers and tributaries are not accessible to anyone and have never been seen by modern man. With the use of a helicopter, we will be able to access these virgin areas with a few lucky anglers every year.
This new program will help us offer this dream trip to anglers around the world and bring them an opportunity to go above and beyond their fishing adventure dreams with this unique world-class experience that will stand out among others. We are confident that this experience we have created will surpass your expectations and remain a valuable life memory for you to cherish for the rest of your life.

Our Species
Golden Dorado
The King of the River
Salminus maxillosus or the Golden Dorado, from the Characidae family, are the number one predator in our waters. The Golden Dorado possess a bright golden coloration, accented by rows of tiny small back dots running along their powerful streamlined bodies. Their massive heads and matching jaws are equipped with rows of razor sharp pointy teeth. Golden Dorado can reach upwards of 100cm in length and weigh as much as 45lbs (20.5kgs), making it the worst nightmare of pretty much every single sabalo and small to medium fish or animal that happens to be in the water at the wrong place and time. This fish is a force to be reckoned with, and is the single most important species in this river system. They attack flies with tremendous power and ferocity and break water thrashing violently several times in efforts to break off. The aggression in its fight and awe-inspiring beauty is the reason for the project and its success in protecting this area. The Golden Dorado are considered guardians of the river according to the indigenous Tsimane folklore, and for the first time in this river, sport fishing eco-tourism has allowed them to really show their worth.

Payara
Hydrolycus scomberoides
Payara are formidable predators that hunt in packs mainly during the early morning and late afternoon. They are a beautiful chrome silver with tall and long muscular bodies, weighing up to 20+ lbs! Their spectacular dentition built to slash and impale baitfish, is used similarly to how marlin or sailfish use their bill. Fishing for the payara or cachorra larga, normally happens in fast rapids and deep in back eddy pools using heavy sinking lines and stripping flies along the bottom. One of many unique aspects about this fishery is that payara will hunt in packs along the surface of pools and back eddies, in pocket water and shallow runs! These predators are hunting for matrinxa or other baitfish, ready to chase and attack, which makes for great sight-fishing opportunities from the boat or on foot.
Giant Wolf Fish
Hoplias aimara
Trairao aren’t your average predatory fish. These prehistoric looking fish are the Amazon’s embodiment of ferocity and power. Their dark, imposing figures together with their intimidating jaws earn them respect from anglers and other species alike. Giant wolffish in this river can get upwards of 30-35lbs and up to 90cm long! Trairao are voracious predators, eating anything that moves they can get a hold of, with ruthless appetite. While they prefer slack water and around back eddies with structure they’ll also hunt the rivers edges and the shallows. They hunt by positioning themselves next to a rock or log and remain perfectly still, waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey.
Arapaima
Arapaima gigas
The largest member of the bony tongue fishes, the pirarucu or arapaima is a prehistoric predator. This species is an ambush predator that sits and waits for unsuspecting prey to swim close enough to inhale with a powerful suction into the hard rough plates inside its mouth where they are crushed for swallowing (hence the “bony tongue” reference). These fish also have a pseudo-lung, a specially adapted swim bladder that allows gas exchange through capillaries that extract oxygen from atmospheric air. This means that arapaima are obligate air breathers, so they can drown if they do not go up for air every 10-20 min. They have a muscular streamlined elongate body, with a dark green color that can vary to golden yellow, with fire red or blaze orange markings. Their scales are huge and made up of very hard chitin, which gives them an armor-like cover that protects them from predators when in juvenile stage. Arapaima have adapted to withstand low quality water, with very low dissolved oxygen and when water levels recede, they can stay back in lagoons where other predators must leave and only small fish and juveniles are able to tolerate water quality parameters. This allows them to feed extensively in what other fish use as their nurseries. These giants are some of the fastest growing fish in the world, able to grow 13-15kgs in 14 months! Where prey is plentiful, they can grow up to 2.5mts or more and weigh above 200kgs! Pirarucu means “red fish” in the local native language. These monsters will eat flies, generally streamers that are stripped slowly down in the bottom to mid stratification of shallow lagoons or rivers in Amazonia.
